Inquiry-based instruction requires that students connect what they know to what they wonder about and has them develop a plan to expand their knowledge. In this workshop, we’ll explore what inquiry is and will discuss specific, meaningful ways that inquiry can be used in your classroom to make learning a richer, more meaningful experience for your students. We’ll talk about the importance of anticipating student misconceptions, using effective questioning and response behavior, and how to guide students rather than direct them. You’ll get plenty of theory in this workshop but, more importantly, you’ll leave the workshop with one or more inquiry-based units that you can use immediately. This workshop can be generalized for your entire school system, or modified to address the needs of specific subject areas and/or grade levels. Examples of subject area workshops include Teaching Mathematics through Inquiry and Teaching Language Arts through Inquiry.
